Some call it Insomnia, but some are actually suffering from Sleep Deprivation. But what's the difference, and how is it affecting you?
Read on...
Although the impacts of both these conditions result in similar outcomes (exhausted, and a lack of sleep), they are quite different in terms of what they actually are.
Insomnia is an ‘inability’ to sleep – either getting to sleep, or waking during sleep (and not being able to return to sleep again), or to not sleep for long enough overall. It's certainly not something an individual would ‘choose’ to get.
There are also numerous medical conditions that can lead directly to insomnia, or lead to some conditions where the symptoms are the cause of making it difficult to sleep. Either way, there is plenty of opportunity, just a distinct lack of actual sleep.
Sleep deprivation however occurs when the individual may be desperately tired and want to sleep. Unfortunately, other influences stop this from happening.
Too many social events, or squeezing too much out of you social life? Or perhaps events that are more a requirement and pressure for you. Maybe there are other consequences if you choose to sleep instead - for example, a crying baby, or having family caring responsibilities, or perhaps working shifts and long hours. In fact, just being a ‘busy adult’ can easily and unconsciously lead to this. Unlike Insomnia, there may just not be sufficient opportunities for sleep.
Whatever the reasons - lack of sleep can be excruciating in terms of the effects on us.
